To mark its 60th edition, the Montreux Jazz Festival presents The Elegance of Time, a book showcasing over 150 portraits by Anoush Abrar. Amid the hustle and bustle of backstage at the Festival, Anoush Abrar often has only seconds to capture his portraits — a fleeting window he transforms into a timeless artistic gesture.

PORTRAITS AND STORIES BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE MJF

Anoush Abrar has been working closely with the Festival’s artists since 2018. The Elegance of Time revisits some of these rare moments: capturing Raye, visibly moved alongside her Swiss grandfather, in a portrait that would later feature on the cover of her album Live at Montreux; Marc Rebillet inviting Abrar onto the Lake Stage, before posing in his underwear in front of 5,000 spectators; photographing Grace Jones dressed as a vintage aviator in her room at the Montreux Palace; and documenting Quincy Jones during what would prove to be his final evening at Montreux.

TIME AS THE FESTIVAL’S UNIFYING THREAD

Time is the thread that runs through this book, unfolding across some thirty stories. The Montreux Jazz Festival unfolds at its own distinctive rhythm, poised somewhere between the magic of the moment and the echoes of its storied past. A brief interlude each summer, where rare, and even legendary, moments are born. Measured in minutes, days or years, every story is anchored in a specific moment in time: 2.45am, the time when Sam Smith joined a late-night jam session alongside an African kora player; 16 days, the length of Jon Batiste’s stay, from the Festival’s opening day to its close; 1978, the year Gilberto Gil introduced Brazilian music to Montreux; or 11.15pm, when Benson Boone brought his concert to a close with an acrobatic dive from the Lake Stage.

A TESTAMENT TO AN EXTRAORDINARY CHAPTER: THE LAKE STAGE

The Elegance of Time also recounts the two unforgettable years of the Lake Stage, bringing a poetic close to this chapter in the Festival’s story. In 2024 and 2025, Anoush Abrar moved away from his fixed studio at the Convention Centre and adopted a fully mobile approach, photographing artists at the very heart of the Festival’s settings: the lake and surrounding mountains, as well as technical areas, dressing rooms and the stage itself. His portraits became delicate witnesses to a fleeting, extraordinary moment in time.

To mark the 60th edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival, from 5 to 27 September 2026, the Biennale Images Vevey is presenting a monumental open-air installation of photographs by Anoush Abrar, on display on the façade and in the gardens of Nestlé’s headquarter.

ABOUT ANOUSH ABRAR

Anoush Abrar is a renowned Swiss-Iranian photographer born in Tehran. Driven by an insatiable curiosity, he has made the exploration of hidden or hard-to-reach worlds his signature. Whether stepping into the cockpits of fighter jets or entering the closed circles of Kyoto’s geishas, he seeks complete immersion as a way of understanding. Portraiture is his chosen language, which he approaches with the same intensity whether his subject is an unknown face or a head of state, an international star or a forgotten figure. He works with light as his medium, and treats each subject with equal care, guided by the trace each encounter leaves behind on the viewer. Abrar has been nominated four times for the prestigious Taylor Wessing National Portrait Gallery Prize, and reached the final shortlist on two occasions. His portraits and projects have been exhibited in galleries around the world, and he has received a number of major awards.

2026 programme: a vibrant and colorful programme to celebrate the 60th edition

From 3 to 18 July 2026, the MJF will celebrate its 60th edition in a brand-new conference centre. After a two-year hiatus, audiences will once again enjoy the acoustics and comfort of its iconic venues: the Stravinski Auditorium and the Montreux Jazz Lab. Bridging generations, styles and continents, the programme brings together pop culture icons, emerging voices and legends of jazz, rock and hip-hop.

Already brought to life by Kévin Germanier’s flamboyant work, the 60th edition now unveils its vibrant programme. Expect special projects, exclusive shows and evenings steeped in symbolism and history. This summer, around forty artists – more than half of the line-up – will perform their only Swiss show in Montreux.

Reflecting increasingly open and global musical trends, 22 countries from every continent are represented in the line-up, from Japan to South Africa, via Brazil, Canada, Portugal and New Zealand.

A return to the convention centre, with an expanded route along the quays

After two years of open-air events, the Festival returns to a refurbished convention centre, featuring redesigned access points and larger terraces. The most recent editions have also provided valuable lessons: the MJF is therefore retaining its extended route along the quays to ease the flow of visitors and provide more spaces to relax.

The Montreux Jazz Club settles in Geneva for a temporary residency

From April 14 to 18, the spirit of the Montreux Jazz Festival takes over Geneva as part of the “In The City” program of the Watches & Wonders watch show. For five consecutive evenings, a pop-up Montreux Jazz Club will open its doors at Quai du Général-Guisan to offer an immersive and intimate musical experience.

Find the cozy yet vibrant atmosphere that makes the Festival’s reputation in a temporary setting located in the heart of Geneva. The Montreux Jazz Club is dedicated to both enthusiasts and the curious, prioritizing sound quality and proximity.

A Three-Part Program

Each session is designed to accompany you from the end of the day until late at night:

5:00 PM – 7:00 PM: Music listening session and quiz
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM: Opening DJ set followed by a concert at 8:00 PM
9:00 PM – 11:15 PM: Aftershow

Concert Schedule

The Club’s concerts feature six artists who have performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in recent years.

Vendredi sur Mer (14.04): A figure of contemporary French-speaking pop, whose soft and melancholy voice carries intimate songs about desires and flaws.
Leo Middea (15.04): Brazilian singer-songwriter with an international career, blending MPB, samba, and bossa nova into a warm pop style between Europe and Latin America.
Wamen (16.04): A Franco-Cameroonian artist with direct and poetic songwriting, drawing from a double musical culture to recount the wounds and struggles of a generation.
Flora Fishbach (17.04): A French singer with an unclassifiable pop universe, reinventing herself in a more solar project and an intense live performance blending a celestial voice with dancing energy.
Béesau (18.04): French trumpeter and producer exploring an instrumental universe between jazz, hip-hop, and electro, in a poetic and introspective atmosphere.
TUKAN (18.04): Brussels quartet known for explosive live performances, fusing indietronica, rock, techno, and jazz into music made for dancing.

MJF Spotlight Sessions 2026: discover tomorrow’s stars in Villars!

For the fourth consecutive year, the MJF Spotlight Sessions will energize the resort of Villars-sur-Ollon. Six emerging artists, selected by the Montreux Jazz Festival programming team, will perform at the Villars Palace Theatre over three weekends between March 6 and April 4, 2026.

Rising stars in a spectacular setting: the MJF Spotlight Sessions continue their exploration of new musical trends in Villars. After unveiling artists such as Yamê, Victor Ray, and Sienna Spiro, the Montreux Jazz Festival presents a new selection of six promising talents.

Inspired as much by Etta James as by Gilberto Gil, she bridges Afro-American and Brazilian music with style, flair, and a sharp sense of modernity. She’s got full-on star power and can sing absolutely anything. On her latest album, we’re just as hooked on the upbeat tracks as the more intimate ones — including her gorgeous collaboration with pianist Amaro Freitas, a former participant of the Montreux Jazz Academy. And just a few weeks ago, Liniker made history by becoming the most awarded trans woman in Latin Grammy history.”

She blends Isan folk with Afrobeat, jazz, and soul in a fully instrumental format that grooves hard. She calls it Afro-Thai Funk. It’s reminiscent of Khruangbin, but with an extra jazz and Afro twist.”

Kévin Germanier’s Haute Couture Poster for the 60th edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival

Fittingly flamboyant, the Montreux Jazz Festival struts into its 60^thyear with an haute couture creation, making Kévin Germanier the first fashion designer to create an official Festival poster. Originally from Valais, Switzerland, and now based in Paris, the designer has dressed Björk, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, and designed the costumes for the Ceremonies of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as well as the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest held in Basel.

“Right away, I knew that I wanted to embroider the poster, treating it like one of my haute couture pieces. The challenge was to recreate the illusion of a three-dimensional artwork. To achieve this result, six people were embroidering at the same time. It’s a true technical feat – a kind of organised chaos.“

A piece composed of 60,000 beads and sequins

True to his signature upcycling approach, Kévin Germanier created the entire poster from recycled materials drawn from his previous collections. More than 60,000 sequins and beads in glass, wood, and plastic have been meticulously hand-embroidered onto a velvet backdrop. Wool and even fragments of electrical tubing can also be found woven into the work. This explosion of colour stands out even more vividly against a deep black background.

Inspired by Jean Tinguely

Kévin Germanier delved into the Festival’s historic poster archive, aiming to honour its legacy while leaving his own creative mark. The designer defined a preferred colour palette, then completed the first sketches by hand. He particularly found inspiration in Jean Tinguely’s poster, echoed in his own choice of colour, dark background, and even the feather motif.

“My favourite posters represent the Festival in a way that isn’t literal. Music isn’t just a saxophone or a guitar; it’s a feeling. I tried to capture that explosion, that emotion that makes your body sway and your heart stir. I wanted something generous, dynamic and vibrant.“

The original artwork will be displayed at MUDAC in Lausanne as part of Kévin Germanier’s exhibition “Les Monstrueuses. Carte blanche à Kévin Germanier”, from 7 November 2025 to 22 March 2026. It will then be exhibited at the Montreux Jazz Shop from 3 to 18 July 2026.

Originally from Granges, in the canton of Valais, Kévin Germanier is recognized as one of the most distinctive voices in international fashion. A graduate of the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London, he founded his eponymous label in Paris in 2018, following a period at Louis Vuitton.

His explosive and conscious universe challenges conventions: blending haute couture with environmental responsibility, Germanier embodies a new era of sustainable luxury. By repurposing discarded materials — beads, crystals, feathers, or fabric scraps — he has created a spectacular, sensual, and boldly colorful visual language.

A heritage for the arts since 1967

Since its beginnings, the Montreux Jazz Festival has given Swiss and international artists carte blanche to design its official poster. In 1982, Jean Tinguely left his indelible mark, creating the unmistakable logo still used for the Festival today. In 1983, Keith Haring designed three versions, later collaborating with Andy Warhol in 1986. David Bowie made his contribution in 1995, followed in recent years by Yoann Lemoine (Woodkid), Malika Favre, Christian Marclay, Ignasi Monreal, JR, and Rylsee.

MJF Residency 2025: four days of sharing and exploration

Now in its sixth consecutive year, the initiative, organised by the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation, has enabled young artists to enjoy a rich learning experience and exchange ideas with inspiring mentors and professionals. The activities open to the public attracted enthusiastic crowds, who turned out in large numbers to attend showcases, discover emerging bands and enjoy jam sessions.

PRIX COUP DE COEUR donated by Julius Baer

French artist of Ivorian origin, wordsofAzia won the Coup de Cœur Prize offered by Julius Baer Bank, partner of the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation. Her poetic and spiritual universe, blending soul, jazz and traditional Bhété rhythms, captivated the audience in the hall and on social media. She wins music equipment of her choice worth CHF 8,000.

Congratulations to the other groups that were in the running for the prize: Antonio Monasterio Ensamble, Rania Yasmine, Den Dala, ISHA, Wet Enough!?, Aino Salto and Ramzi Hammad Collective.

Organised for the sixth consecutive year, the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation (MJAF) autumn festival revolves around a unique artistic residency. Over four days, eight emerging bands benefit from an intensive programme supervised by renowned mentors. In the evenings from 6pm, the residency opens its doors to the public with a rich musical, educational and festive programme.

CONCERTS

Every evening, two emerging bands from the residency – one Swiss and one international – will perform on stage. The audience will be able to vote for their favourite band as part of the Prix Coup de Cœur offered by Julius Baer Bank.

Wednesday 15 October: Antonio Monasterio Ensamble, a Chilean sextet renowned for its dynamic live performances, and Rania Yasmine, a singer with Tunisian and Dominican roots who blends soul, R&B, jazz and Afrobeat.
Thursday 16 October: Den Dala, a Zurich-based instrumental quintet that captivates audiences with its soaring sounds, and ISHA, a Dutch bassist and producer who is currently making a name for herself on the London scene.
Friday 17 October: Wet Enough!?, a French quintet that condenses the most danceable sounds of funk, electronica and hip-hop, and Aino Salto, the solo project of Be\r\n-based Sonia Loenne, combining bittersweet pop with touches of jazz.
Saturday 18 October: Ramzi Hammad, a Swiss-Palestinian drummer and composer who heads a Zurich-based collective that builds bridges between jazz and Levantine music, and Bananasoverdose, a Somali-Ethiopian artist who is redefining East African music, funk and jazz.

WORKSHOPS

A key activity at the MJAF, workshops enable artists to share their knowledge and express themselves – often to music – on a theme of their choice.

Wednesday 15 October: Jas Kayser, British drummer who has toured with Lenny Kravitz and Jorja Smith, among others, will discuss the art of drumming.
Thursday 16 October: Mádé Kuti, grandson of the legendary Fela Kuti, will look back on his family heritage and the evolution of Afrobeat.
Friday 17 October: Lizz Wright, one of the greatest American singers of this century, will talk about the most organic and intimate instrument: the voice.
Saturday 18 October: Christian Sands, one of the most promising American jazz musicians of his generation, will immerse you in the world of the piano.

SHOWCASES

The showcases are short – but intense – performances given in the intimate setting of the Coupole of the Petit Palais. The programme features artists who have received support from the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation.

Wednesday 15 October: Faraj Suleiman, Palestinian pianist who immortalised his 2018 concert on the album Live at Montreux.
Thursday 16 October: Islandman, Turkish psychedelic band, winner of a Montreux Jazz Talent Award in 2018.
Saturday 18 October: Federico Casagrande, Italian guitarist and winner of the Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition in 2007.

JAM SESSIONS

The famous Montreux jam sessions will rock the stage at La Coupole every evening from 10.15 pm. They will be opened and led by a trio consisting of Daisy George(bass), Leandro Irarragorri (keyboard) and Zoe Pascal (drums), all three members of the in-house band for the jam sessions organised during the Montreux Jazz Festival.

CLOSING PARTY

On Saturday, starting at midnight, it’s time for the traditional closing party with British DJ Tim Garcia, founder of the Musica Macondo label, renowned for his versatile selections ranging from jazz, house, broken beat, hip-hop, Latin and Afro sounds.

LISTENING SESSION DU MONTREUX SONGWRITING CAMP

On Friday at 7:15 p.m., discover the compositions created as part of the Montreux Songwriting Camp during a public listening session at the MJF Residency. Organised by SUISA, Pro Helvetia and MJAF, this initiative offers musicians and composers the opportunity to perfect their songwriting skills and compose songs together that are likely to appeal to a wide audience.

Closing of the 59th edition: a celebration of the ephemeral

As we bid farewell to the Lake Stage, we’re convinced that its ephemeral nature has added to the magic of the experience – like a concert you only experience once and remember forever. These two years have proved that the Festival can reinvent itself while remaining true to its soul and values. In Montreux, there will always be that rare alchemy between a place, a history, an audience and its artists. An alchemy that gives rise to exceptional performances every summer.

A page is being turned, but a new one is already being written. In 2026, the Festival will celebrate its 60th edition in a transformed Convention Centre, with a new playground to explore. In the Auditorium Stravinski, we’ll rediscover the sound excellence and listening comfort that are an integral part of our DNA. Outside, on the quays, everything remains to be imagined. On the strength of our recent experience – from the Lake House to the Spotlight Stage, not forgetting the extension to the Place du Marché – we face this challenge with the desire to amaze and surprise you once again.

A huge thank you to the artists, the public, our staff, the people and authorities of Montreux, and our service providers and partners, without whom this extraordinary two-year adventure outside the walls of the Convention Centre would never have been possible.

Celebrating British Culture with the Southbank Centre

The second Festival weekend will feature around twenty events showcasing the richness and diversity of British culture. Highlights include: a concert by Yazz Ahmed, a workshop with Jarvis Cocker, a DJ set by Benji B, a vinyl listening session of Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd), and a screening of the documentary The British Jazz Explosion.

Southbank Centre x MJF Residency

At the heart of this collaboration is the concert Searching for Nina Simone’s Spirit, taking place on 12 July at The Memphis. This original creation is the result of a two-part residency – first in London last January, then in Montreux – bringing together two British artists (Daisy George and Zoe Pascal) and two Swiss talents (NNAVY and Matthieu Llodra), under the direction of Soweto Kinch.

These events are presented by the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation in collaboration with the Southbank Centre – the UK’s largest arts centre, home to four iconic London venues: the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, and Hayward Gallery.

For this new edition, three leading names from the dance/electronic music scene will take the stage on July 16: Parisian Deephouse prodigy Alex Wann, French DJ Chloé Caillet, and South Korean house-music star Peggy Gou. Sharing diverse musical influences and bold sonic identities, these three internationally renowned virtuosos promise an unforgettable night.

The event location will be revealed to ticket holders at the last minute. This year again, access will be up for grabs at the Audemars Piguet Parallel space within the festival and via the MJF’s Instagram.
