Rising stars in a spectacular setting: the MJF Spotlight Sessions continue their exploration of new musical trends in Villars. After unveiling artists such as Yamê, Victor Ray, and Sienna Spiro, the Montreux Jazz Festival presents a new selection of six promising talents.

  • Etta Marcus (06.03): a rising voice in British indie pop, somewhere between Lana Del Rey and Portishead
  • Ino Casablanca (07.03): a new prodigy of French rap, nominated at the Victoires de la Musique, whose sun-drenched groove blends Moroccan, Hispanic, and Caribbean influences
  • Steve Ibrahim (13.03): a Paris-based singer-songwriter with raw emotion, navigating between indie folk and alternative R&B, inspired by Dijon and Bon Iver
  • Friqtao (14.03): a French pianist revealed through his improvised performances in train stations, blending pop, hip-hop, and classical music
  • Sekou (03.04): a British singer whose deeply moving sensitivity draws equally from gospel and pop

Inspired as much by Etta James as by Gilberto Gil, she bridges Afro-American and Brazilian music with style, flair, and a sharp sense of modernity. She’s got full-on star power and can sing absolutely anything. On her latest album, we’re just as hooked on the upbeat tracks as the more intimate ones — including her gorgeous collaboration with pianist Amaro Freitas, a former participant of the Montreux Jazz Academy. And just a few weeks ago, Liniker made history by becoming the most awarded trans woman in Latin Grammy history.”

COUNTRY MEETS HIP-HOP

He’s one of the few artists to successfully blend hip-hop and country. Last winter, the Montreux Jazz Festival brought its MJF Spotlight project to Villars, after taking its sessions to London, Hamburg and Zurich. The Festival is repeating the experience in the Théâtre du Villars Palace, with a programme as up to date and eclectic as ever, featuring pop, rap, soul and instrumental music.

The Festival’s programming team has selected six of the most promising international artists of the moment:

  • Tony Ann (09.02), Canadian pianist with heady, melancholy melodies
  • Marguerite Thiam (10.02), French singer with tortured lyrics and lo-fi productions
  • Yamê (16.02), Franco-Cameroonian singer, rapper and pianist whose unclassifiable style has created a buzz as far afield as the United States
